32 terraced houses in 4 rows; 3 house sizes: 81, 108 and 130 m² total floor space. Mixed construction: Dividing walls, floor slabs and building-services-cum-staircase core are made of prefabricated concrete elements, insulating building envelope of prefabricated lightweight timber elements. Fitted with airing cabinets. Provision of financial incentives to purchase efficient household appliances. Fitted with thermal solar collectors. Supplementary heat supply from local district heat system fed by combined heat and power (CHP) units. Climate neutral through Euro 1.250 share in wind energy facility integrated in house purchase price. Use of one house for seminars, guided tours and exhibitions; use of 1-3 houses by the municipal utility, Stadtwerke Hannover AG, as EXPO 2000 guest houses.

Kassel-Marbachshöhe (D)


2 apartment buildings with a total of 40 housing units (23 + 17), 2.915 m² (1.662 + 1.253 m²) living floor space, 887 m² (723 + 164 m²) further usable floor space. Three full storeys, solid construction (lime-sand bricks with 30 cm thermal insulation), reduced thermal bridging through use of insulating ‘Purenit’ blocks as first course above floor slab. Heat supply from district heat system. Ventilation system: groups of 3–6 units have joint heat exchangers, each unit having separate fans with automatic airflow control.
